January 2025 - Four Corners

So, I've never known a January to pass by so quickly!

After a frozen-off start to the year, the games have come thick and fast for me on BBC Essex Sport, offering me plenty of opportunities to build my commentary identity. I also commentated across six counties in Somerset, Yorkshire, Essex, Lincolnshire, Greater Manchester and Kent, nearly every corner of the country!

I commentated six Southend United games across three weeks, having started with two games being called off due to frozen pitches.

An added challenge this time was that five of them were away games, which saw me travel 1,857.4 miles. I had to manage my time to keep up commentary preparation around my travel.

The best goal I saw, though, came at Roots Hall...

It seems Southend United defender Gus Scott-Morriss can't stop scoring at the moment!

The difference between my commentary of this goal and his Boxing Day winner is my composure. I've heard myself getting louder and this is not always necessary, so I have been tapering back and becoming more conversational in commentary, saving the rise in volume for the big moments.

There was a stunning moment on the road - but it came from the opposition...

This was Bath City's FA Trophy 4th Round goal in a 3-1 defeat to the Blues.

When I'm on local commentary, I'm aware that my audience has a vested interested in Southend United. However, sometimes you do have to celebrate an excellent goal from the opponents, which is what I did here.

January also saw me add another sport to my commentary bow - boxing!

I commentated Ring B at the BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) 2025/26 Boxing Championships on Finals Day in Portsmouth.

I have worked in boxing before at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games but was not behind the mic, so this was a new challenge for me...

I absolutely loved being ringside. It's very easy to get caught up in the thrill of the contests but I kept composed.

This was a YouTube livestream, meaning I was commentating over pictures. I added to what the audience was seeing but know I could speak less and I will strive to work on this more over 2026.

WHAT DID YOU THINK TO THESE CLIPS? GIVE ME YOUR FEEDBACK IN THE COMMENTS BELOW!

I've set up a new routine now of posting videos on TikTok, giving an insight into what happens in the press box.

As mentioned in my last blog, I am working to improve my vocabulary, animal similes, cultural references and 'painting the picture' descriptions, so these videos ensure I hold myself to account.

Do give me a follow on TikTok - I'm off for a couple of weeks in February, so only have one commentary coming up but there will still be a lot to ell you about!
